The Swiss Sustainable Consumption Observatory Releases Report
10.04.2024
The SSCO shares findings from three waves of surveys on sustainable consumption patterns in Switzerland.
The Swiss Sustainable Consumption Observatory (SSCO) is a synthesis activity of the NRP73. Following the NRP73 projects "Sustainable Consumer Behavior" by Prof. Dr. Renate Schubert, "The Influence of Environmental Identities" by Prof. Dr. Sandor Czellar, and "Extending the Life Span of Mobile Devices" by Dr. Yann Blumer, the findings from three waves (2021 – 2023) have been compiled in a report on sustainable consumption patterns in Switzerland. This report provides policymakers, decision-makers in society, and industry with a comprehensive overview of how consumers make choices across different consumption areas.
The SSCO report focuses its analysis on three consumption areas: food, consumer electronics, and textiles. Within these sectors, individuals have significant room for behavioral variation, and each is highly relevant to our environment. The findings indicate that behaviors and perceived obstacles vary significantly between and even within consumption sectors (e.g., different food products). For instance, participants found it easier to identify sustainable practices in the food sector compared to textiles and consumer electronics. This highlights the importance of understanding specific issues and decision-making contexts to identify and implement measures that promote sustainable consumption in various areas.
